Diwali, India’s festival of lights, brought a spectacular surge in electricity usage across the country, with Uttar Pradesh (UP) setting a new national record. During the 24 hours of Diwali celebrations, UP registered an astounding 1,490 million (or 1490 lakh) units of electricity consumed—outpacing all other states and reflecting both the scale of festivities and the state’s expanding electrification.

Unprecedented Demand Across States

According to official statistics from Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC), Uttar Pradesh not only topped the national chart but left traditional high-consumption states far behind:

  • Uttar Pradesh: 1,490 lakh units
  • Haryana: 1,390 lakh units
  • Punjab: 880 lakh units
  • Delhi: 830 lakh units
  • Rajasthan: 560 lakh units

This surge is attributed to extensive Diwali lighting, decoration, celebrations at homes and markets, and an increase in the use of electrical appliances and fireworks.

Power Production and Infrastructure on Full Swing

To meet the exceptional demand, power generation units across UP—especially in Sonbhadra district (home to major power plants like Rihand and Obra)—ran at full capacity. Temporary and inactive units were swiftly restarted to avert outages, with distribution and transmission infrastructure operating above nominal load during festival peak hours. The state’s preparedness ensured uninterrupted supply for both urban and rural consumers.

Diwali Demand: Size, Scale, and National Comparisons

Experts note this year saw a 10% increase in electricity consumption compared to previous Diwali peaks, despite slightly milder weather. The highest recorded demand hovered around 21,000 megawatts, with day-time figures consistently between 17,000–18,000 MW. UP has thus emerged as a national leader in electric power usage during holidays, surpassing states like Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Looking Ahead

State power officials emphasize continued caution as post-Diwali festival season (including Chhath Puja) is expected to sustain high demand. Efforts to maintain backup supply and grid stability are ongoing, with upgraded infrastructure and responsive management playing crucial roles in the record performance.

Diwali 2025 marks a milestone in India’s energy story—a vibrant celebration illuminating not only homes, but also the scale and capabilities of its modern electrical grid.
