Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, Family Booked for Son Akil Akhtar’s Murder After Shocking Allegations Surface
A dramatic turn in Panchkula has gripped police and political circles after Mohammad Mustafa, a retired Director General of Punjab Police, was booked along with his wife (ex-minister Razia Sultana), daughter, and daughter-in-law for the murder and criminal conspiracy in connection with the suspicious death of his son, Akil Akhtar.
Akil Akhtar’s Death: The Trigger
On October 16, Akil Akhtar, a 35-year-old lawyer practicing at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was found unconscious at his home in Panchkula, Haryana. Despite the family’s claim that Akil died from a drug overdose, an FIR was registered following a complaint from neighbor Shamshuddin, who cited Akil’s social media posts and alleged a larger family plot. No signs of foul play had initially been found, but a postmortem was conducted and the body handed to the family for last rites in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Shocking Claims and Evidence
The controversy deepened when a video allegedly recorded by Akil in August resurfaced, in which he accused his father of having an affair with his wife, and claimed his mother and sister were involved in a conspiracy against him. He described mental harassment and threats to his life, setting off questions about his cause of death and suggesting abuse within the family.
Police Action and SIT Probe
The Panchkula police acted on Shamshuddin’s complaint and Akil’s pre-recorded allegations by registering charges under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Indian Penal Code). A special investigation team (SIT), headed by an ACP-rank officer, has been formed to probe the matter “with an open mind and without prejudice, ensuring no innocent person suffers and the guilty are punished.” Investigators are reviewing Akil’s social media activity, medical records, family relations, and call logs for more evidence.
Political Background
Mohammad Mustafa, a decorated 1985-batch IPS officer, became active in Congress soon after his 2021 retirement, and maintained close ties with former Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. Mustafa’s wife Razia Sultana is a three-time MLA from Malerkotla, who also served as a cabinet minister. The family’s prominence has added further scrutiny and pressure on law enforcement to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
The Road Ahead
Akil leaves behind his wife, a son, and a daughter. While his family denies wrongdoing, the case’s dramatic allegations and digital evidence ensure it will remain in the spotlight for months as the SIT continues its investigation.
